Handicap Media is entrenched in the disabled community.  We want to help with motivational stories thru our podcast as well as product reviews, help with resources and align people on our social sites as well as Vlogs.   (YouTube, Twitter, Snap, Instagram and Facebook)

A Brief History

I grew up in the healthcare world, my family owned a local pharmacy.  Initially I wanted nothing to do with "healthcare", so I graduated college with a Criminal Justice degree.  After college when my career as a police officer never took off, I started my own business doing what I kinda already knew....Healthcare.  This is where I really found a passion for individuals.  At first I was focused on building the business and making profit, but the lessons my parents engrained in me naturally took me to another level. I started helping people. I found as much enjoyment in these relationships as I did in growing my business.  I encountered an incredible resilience in individuals that had in some way or another become "handicapped".  The drive they had to push forward and overcome motivated me to get involved in any way I could. Fortunately, I also watched my parents grow a business and be smashed by insurance, extensive legalities, and hard-headed technicalities. Yes I said fortunately. Working through these obstacles helped turn me into the businessman I am today.

My dad always said, "Do the right thing, and then good things will come from that."   Thanks Dad!!

I speak constantly on "learned helplessness" as I have seen it from children to adults.  A major spotlight of this media focus is on just that.  It is not just in the disabled community, but it certainly dominates there. You do have control!!!! Start doing, even if you are physically and mentally limited in any capacity.  I have met so many badasses who "DO" every day.  I cannot even comprehend the drive these people have, the hours it takes just to get to dressed is exhausting.  But they do it!!!!!

That's what this is all about. Connecting the doers and helping align people's mentalities to achieve whatever ANY individual wants. Oh, and having some fun along the way.

Disability. Handicap. Impairment. Physically challenged.

These are all ways that people have described me at some point in my life. There are others (much less flattering and not worth mentioning). What are these? Labels? Definitive descriptors…

I'm JP and I'm gonna be your guide on this wild ride, this 6 wheel adventure. Along with my friend Asz, we're going to take you inside the world of disability/wheelchair life like never before. This podcast and the blog you're reading right now is going to be like no other. We're going to talk about what needs to be talked about. We're going to say what other people are afraid to say, we're going to show what life is really like from my vantage point and people like me.

I'm 42, use a power chair and have cerebral palsy. I work full-time and I'm a father to 2 great boys! I supervise people and make big decisions and I've been featured on the national stage more than once. I'm trying to level the playing field. I'm determined to help other people get their shot at the American dream. Did you know it still exists? It does. Not just for you and not just for me, but for all of us.

Most people see me and they think I sit at home and draw a check, or have my mom take care of me. Don't think so. You see all of us were born with the desire to be successful. My parents instilled a work ethic and me at an early age, and I'm so thankful for that. Others weren't so lucky. You see there's a silent killer out there called "Learned Helplessness" that is keeping people from getting their piece of the pie. Too many people give creed to the whispers of society that tell us we can do something that tell us to stay home and be thankful for government assistance. We are here to fight against that mentality.

We are going to have a lot of fun on this podcast, I'm going to be doing a blog such as this at least once a week. We're also going to be doing live video podcasting as well as weekly video blogs. You will see great product reviews, have a chance to join us in disability related discussions. We're also going to chop it up in other areas such as sports, entertainment, travel and nightlife. We are big MMA fans as well as other sports so if you like talking about the big fights you are at the right place! All of that will be in addition to our main focus which is being the most authentic disability media platform in the world. We will be taking your calls and answering your messages (each and every one of them). We will not be breaking down barriers piece by piece. We will be shattering them with a sledgehammer!

We are going to get out of our comfort zones, and nothing is off limits. Politics, current events, fatherhood, sex, love and everything else that makes us different from other mammals LOL! It's time for the world to know what people with disabilities are all about. I grew up in a small country town of about 200 people. Where people got up in the morning and work all day. Where a handshake was all the contract a man needed. His word meant something and everyone got a shot. Now as I look around, many people like me are not getting a shot. I'm also seeing a lot of "able-bodied people" who don't even try. They have happily embraced the warm blanket that is learned helplessness. However I'm here to tell you that blanket is wet and cold. Young people with disabilities, grind and fight. Don't limit yourself. Be better than me and be better than you ever thought you could be. Let's change the world. Is your chair charged up?
